Worm Food, 082011

Normally, I take an overview shot of the food I am going to give the worms and post that image with an itemized list of what the worms were fed. This time I give you a play-by-play of what the worms were fed.

A whole pineapple, minus the parts I saved for me.

I did remove the label and the plastic attaching said label before dumping the pineapple rind, core, and top into a worm bin.

3 cups of whole, old, wrinkly cherries.

About 2 cups of vegetable remains from when I cooked: orange bell pepper, carrots, and onions.

The pistachio shells from Todd's nut breakfast.

About 2 cups consisting of a few onion remnants, furry avocado peel, and something unidentifiable at the bottom of the container. Whatever that sludge was, the worms got it for lunch.

A 2-cup container of primarily cherry pits and stems along with an avocado pit and skin.

This bin contains grocery bag of banana dubes and a shiny bag of coffee grounds, both from Bill. I gave the worms the dubes, but only a small portion of the grounds.

Bill's Worm Poop and Tony's Worms

Toward the end of July, I worked on prepping a batch of poop for Bill. The worms I hand-picked out of the poop went into a Glad container of damp paper for Tony. When I had the poop and worms all set to go, I decided to put the Glad container of worms inside a cardboard box. I can't even explain why.

The next morning, getting the stuff rounded up before heading to work, I snapped a photo of Bill's worm poop. It's pretty.

And then I picked up the worm container to find that a lot of the worms migrated out of the plastic container to lay around it on the cardboard.

I scooped those buggers back into the Glad container, snapped the Glad lid tightly on two of the four corners and made my deliveries.

Last I heard, those worms have been happily thriving at Tony's in the worm bin he has set up in his shed.

Here's a photo of the compost and worm bins Tony got from a seminar on composting in his city back in June. Those worms are now in Tony's Wriggly Wranch.

A Bag of Something Special from Bill

Talking about what worms eat one day, I rambled on about how worms can eat just about anything organic. Bill says, with a slight roll of his googly eye, "Anything? What about hair?" I said something like, "Yep, hair, toenails, whatever you've got."

A couple weeks later, Bill gave me this bag. It looks like pepper, right? But it's not. It's beard hair from Bill's electric shaver. Isn't that just horrifyingly fascinating?

Yesterday I emptied the bag over salad I'd fed to Eve.

And it actually looks edible. Creepy, so very, very creepy.

I Need to Retract a Previous Statement

Rather, I need to clarify what I'd implied. Earlier I sort of suggested that Bill hasn't been saving his banana peels.  I found out today I was dead wrong.  He has been saving them but just hasn't put them in the designated ("rotten food scum" covered) bag. Turns out, Bill has been twisting each banana peel in a sheet of paper like a big dube (Bill's words!) and stowing each banana dube in the freezer.

As the first bag was full, I started a new bag and it's nearly full already with Bill's banana dubes, but there was plenty of room for the cup of pistachio shells he gave me. I am thankful that Bill isn't saving each banana peel in a fresh, scum-free, Ziploc bag.  My crew will eat the paper.

In other news:

I gave Tony the delicata squash I'd picked up and imaged yesterday.  We compared it to the squash image Clare had collected, and judging by Tony's reaction, it's pretty much locked-in that at least one of their plants is of the delicata variety.

There's been an addition to the Poop Queue. I'm thinking I should really do something to crank out a batch of the good stuff. After all, I have three worm bins with second stories on them.  The oldest is certainly primed for harvesting by now. Since Korean 1 is almost over (Final Exam Monday), I might have some time to do it by Xmas. While it's not difficult, it does require my taking the time to make it happen. And there's the fact that I estimated I'd have had a batch ready a month from this post.  YIKES!

And those rotting lemons?  They're still chillin' over by the slider.  I'm sort of scared to open the bag. I can just imagine the hideousness within.

Bill, a Banana Guy

Bill eats a banana in the afternoon every single day.  Every day Bill throws that banana peel away.  Yesterday, I says to Bill mid-banana-munch, "what are you gonna do with that peel?"  He whipped out a zip-locking bag, put the peel in there and handed it to me.  Sweet! The worms are gonna love this!

I labeled the bag "Bill's Banana Peels" and stowed it in one of the breakroom freezers.  Steve, the machinist, has added a banana peel to the bag. And Tony plans to also. It'll be neat to see how long before that gallon bag is full. The worms haven't had banana peels in a while, so they're gonna love it.

...............................................................................
On a side note, I've been taking a Korean language course, which hogs all of my time and somewhat contributes to the lack of posts. I've been considering dropping as it's complete insanity, this course, but now I'm thinking, "Screw it!  I've suffered through nearly half the semester already, I can stick this bitch out!"  I might become delirious with lack of sleep, ramble excessively loudly regarding how much I hate this class, become quite bleary-eyed, but I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.

Name that show! OK, I'm already delirious.

However, you can now consider me the Rocky Balboa of Korean Language courses.

Picture this:
Adrian comes out of her coma after having Rocky Jr. and said, "Rock, there's one thing I want you to do for me..."
Rocky looks at Adrian with droopy, yet questioning, eyes.
"WIN!"
And of course, Rocky subsequently trains like a mad-man after having sunken to a serious low with discernable concern for his comatose wife and kicks ass! That's me: I'm in training for Korean Language ass-kicking. To clarify, I'm going to kick the shit out of the Korean Language, respectfully using honorific terms when applicable; it is NOT going to kick the shit out of me.

Name that movie!

And that's all I have to say about that.

Now name that movie! Yep, absolute confirmation of delirium, right there.

First person to name all three movies correctly wins a worm bin!
